Bank Indonesia will begin testing a digital rupee in order to increase the efficiency of the national payment system. As the bank representative, Susiato Dewi said, Central banks of other countries are already testing digital currencies for use as official alternatives to existing cryptocurrencies. “The banknotes that we are currently using can be converted into a digital currency.” The radical departure of the state digital currency will be its provision with assets. The Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia is considering the use of bitcoin as an investment tool. A digital rupee is planned to be tied to a physical banknote, as well as to the level of inflation.
